脉管炎是一种以肢体动脉、静脉发生节段性炎症，使血管管腔狭窄、闭塞、血栓栓塞的器质性血管病，病程长多呈缓进性加重，常致肢体发生缺血或瘀血病损，甚者肢体溃烂脱落，是一种残损率极高的疾病。它一般是由多种原因引起的损伤性血管植物性神经麻痹，因植物性神经麻痹，不能支配四肢肌型血管的收缩与舒张活动，导致血液失去了继续前进的促进力而停滞，停滞的血液不能进行新陈代谢，血液成份发生变化，血凝度增高，形成血栓，最终堵塞血管。至于血管的炎症，也是因植物性神经麻痹造成的，麻痹导致了血管的舒缩活动停止，停止活动的血管出现一系列病理改变：内皮细胞和成纤维细胞增生，弹力层增厚，管腔变窄，形成无菌性炎症。临床主要表现为患肢局部的皮肤颜色和温度改变、间歇性跛行，静止性疼痛，严重者可并发溃疡、坏疽，以青壮年男性最易罹患。现代医学对脉管炎的发病机理至今尚无统一认识，一般认为，多与交感神经功能紊乱及自身免疫反应等密切有关。而吸烟是目前国内外公认的诱发因素。此外，寒冷、潮湿、感染、创伤等都可以成为潜在的诱因。血栓闭塞性脉管炎在中医学中属于“脱疽”范畴，又称之为“脱痈”。
